Hipster Biker Spot Animation [Editorial]

Animation of a bike messenger that may be reasonably 'hip' by beards' standards. Collaboration between Latham Arnott and Myself

Hipster Biker Animation

A fun side project between animator Latham Arnott and myself. We wanted to flex our muscles and try to take an otherwise overdone and boring animation cycle and make it a bit more interesting.

For me, it was a challenge in designing the character to be energetic and unique but simple, and even more, ready for animation rather than just designing for a still frame. For Latham, how much energy can you inject into a simple cycle of x frames and make it look like something that we created, and no one else?

The result was really well received and Latham went on to create a tutorial of how he rigged it all up here.

Process & Sketches

When creating this character, I wanted to pull as much work off of Latham's plate as possible. As the illustrator, I tried my best to get it ready to be rigged. That is, rounding out shoulders and necks with circular joints, drawing things that would normally be unseen like his back legs and arms, and drawing all the objects with certain motion in mind, such as the backpack straps and the way the beard bounce.
